Eat Hearty


Since 1986, Missouri Baptist Medical Center, a member of BJC HealthCareSM, and Dierbergs Markets have provided Eat Hearty®, an informational program aimed at helping you choose heart-healthy foods. The following are the key components of the Eat Hearty program:

 Shelf Tag Program The heart logo on the Eat Hearty shelf tag helps identify heart-healthy foods.The heart identifies foods that do not exceed specific levels for total fat, saturated fat, cholesterol and sodium, as recommended in the latest Food and Drug Administration guidelines. Dierbergs professional home economists and Missouri Baptist Medical Center registered dietitians regularly evaluate foods to determine which qualify as Eat Hearty selections.
   
 Cooking Classes Eat Hearty recipes and cooking tips are provided through the Eat Hearty cooking classes offered by Missouri Baptist Medical Center and Dierbergs School of Cooking. Brochures with class information are available at all Dierbergs Markets or you'll find an up-to-date schedule here online.  Everybody Cooks® Eat Hearty recipes or modifications are identified by the heart logo Dierbergs Everybody Cooks® magazine, a free quarterly publication, is available at all Dierbergs Markets. Also, look for the heart logo on all Eat Hearty recipes available at Dierbergs Markets and Missouri Baptist Medical Center.  
   
 Advice for Today Today's heart-health message is to choose a diet low in saturated fat and cholesterol, and moderate in total fat. 
  • Limit use of solid fats, such as butter, hard margarine, lard and partially hydrogenated shortening. Use vegetable oils as a substitute.
  • Choose fat-free or low-fat products, cooked dry beans and peas, fish, lean meats and poultry.
  • Eat plenty of whole grains, vegetables and fruits daily.
  • Use the Nutrition Facts label and the Eat Hearty shelf tags to help choose foods lower in fat, saturated fat and cholesterol.

Use these daily guidelines for making heart-healthy food choices.

  • Keep fat intake low, particularly saturated fat.
  • Keep cholesterol intake under 200 mg per day.
  • Keep sodium intake under 2,400 mg per day.
  • Include two to four servings of fruit per day.
  • Include three to five servings of vegetables per day.
Include fiber-rich breads, cereals and whole grains every day.
   
 Eat Hearty Guidlines

In order for a food item to be identified with a red heart logo , it must fall within the following guidelines:

LOW FAT

  • Meals or main dishes = 3 grams of fat per 100 grams of food product
  • All other foods = 3 grams of fat or less per serving

LOW SATURATED FAT

  • Meal or main dishes = 1 gram of fat per 100 grams of food product
  • All other foods = 1 gram of fat or less per serving

LOW CHOLESTEROL

  • Meals or main dishes = 20 mg of cholesterol per 100 grams of food product
  • All other foods = 20 mg of cholesterol per serving

SODIUM

  • Meal product = less than 960 mg per serving
  • Main dish = less than 720 mg per serving
All other foods = less than 480 mg per serving
