What to Expect at Your Mammogram Appointment
-
Our Breast HealthCare Center is handicapped accessible. Follow signs to the North Entrance (Building D). There, we offer free valet parking or free parking in the garage directly under Building D.
See map.
-
When you arrive at the Center, we take care of you. Our staff understands the anxieties a woman often experiences when it comes to her annual mammogram. After you register, a staff member will escort you to our gown fitting area and private waiting room.
-
When it’s time for your mammogram, a technician will take you to one of our digital imaging suites for your mammogram.
-
A mammogram is an X-ray of the breast. It can reveal tumors too small to be felt and can show other changes in the breast that doctors believe may suggest cancer.
-
Digital mammography provides one of the most advanced imaging technologies available.
-
Mammopads are available to all our patients, which are placed on the mammogram equipment to provide a warmer, softer surface for our patients.
-
During a mammogram, the breast is pressed between two plates: some pressure is applied to get a picture. Usually, two X-rays are taken of each breast, one from the top and one from the side. Although some women are concerned about radiation exposure, the risk is very small.
Getting Your Results
-
A member of our team of board certified radiologists, who specialize in breast health imaging and diagnostics, will review your mammogram.
-
If your previous exam was performed at Missouri Baptist Medical Center: your exam will be compared to your previous exam within three working days.
-
If your previous exam was performed at another facility, your exam may be held for 15 days before being read while we wait for previous, outside films to be sent to us.
-
If you have had a mammogram at another facility, it’s important for you to bring your films with you on the day of your mammogram.
-
You will receive a letter in the mail seven to 10 business days following the reading of your exam. If you need follow-up, we will call if you have indicated this request to us.
Additional Views/Ultrasound
-
When a woman needs additional views or further diagnostic testing related to an issue in her breast, we understand the anxieties that she may experience.
-
For those women, the Breast HealthCare Center strives to get patients in as quickly as possible and provides same-day test results as long as previous images are available.
-
We pride ourselves on service excellence and quick turnaround -- we know you’re waiting and we know you’re anxious.
-
Appointments are required for diagnostic mammograms and ultrasounds, and patients should bring prior, outside films to the appointment to ensure same-day results.
Breast Biopsy
-
Women needing a biopsy for further diagnosis are referred to the Nurse Navigator in our Multidisciplinary Breast Clinic. We understand that from the instant a woman is told she needs a biopsy to the moment she learns the results of that biopsy, can be one of the hardest, most anxiety-filled times. That's why we provide a Nurse Navigator for each patient undergoing a biopsy. This nurse stays with the patient throughout the entire procedure -- guiding, educating and advocating for the patient.
-
Breast biopsy results are available between 24 and 48 hours. We call our patients and their doctors; we don’t require patients to come in to receive results. Our nurses also call patients the next day to follow-up and to provide further treatment resources or assist in any way.
-
In the event that cancer is detected in a woman’s breast, the Clinic offers personalized and unified care by breast cancer specialists at Missouri Baptist Medical Center. We offer our patients a specialized care-team approach to develop the best course of treatment with each individual patient.
