What is a Vascular Ultrasound?
A vascular ultrasound is a procedure that uses high-frequency sound waves to create images of the blood vessels in the limbs of the body. During the test, a technologist uses a hand-held probe (also known as a transducer) to send sound waves into the body. The sound waves reflect off of structures within the body and send a signal back through the probe that creates an image or a wave form. Unlike X-rays, ultrasound does not expose the patient to any radiation.
Why do doctors recommend Ultrasound?
The doctor uses vascular ultrasound to examine the blood vessels in the body. These tests are commonly used to check the blood flow.
How do I prepare for my exam?
There are no preparations for vascular exams. Before having arterial testing, it is best not to smoke and also best to arrive early on cold days to allow your body to warm up before the test begins. You will lie down for your tests. The technologist will use a clear water based gel on your skin and move a hand held probe over your skin in the area to be examined. The tests are usually painless and no needles or injections are used.
How long will the test take?
Most ultrasound tests take less than 1 hour to complete.
What happens after the exam?
After the exam, a physician who specializes in reading vascular ultrasound images will analyze the images. The results will be interpreted, dictated and sent to your doctor.
