What is a Uterine Artery Embolization?
A Uterine Artery Embolization is a procedure that blocks the blood flow to a uterine fibroid, causing the fibroid to shrink and die. The procedure is minimally invasive, and requires little recovery time.
Why do doctors recommend a Uterine Artery Embolization?
A Uterine Artery Embolization is typically used for the treatment of fibroids, and is an alternative to surgery.
What happens during a Uterine Artery Embolization?
An interventional radiologist inserts a catheter into the femoral artery. The radiologist guides the catheter to the fibroid using X-ray images. When the fibroid is reached, tiny particles are injected that will block the blood flow to the fibroid. The procedure is done under slight sedation.
What is the recovery time for a Uterine Artery Embolization?
A one-night hospital stay is required for the procedure, as well as pain medications. Most women experience some cramping for several days, but are able to return to normal activities within several days.
