What is a Biopsy?
A biopsy is a test that takes a small sample of tissue from a certain area of your body, using a very small needle. The tissue sample is then sent to the lab to be processed.
Who performs a Biopsy?
A board-certified radiologist will perform the biopsy, with the assistance of a registered nurse and a radiologic technologist.
Will the Biopsy hurt?
You will be given medication to help you relax, and to numb the area. A registered nurse will monitor you during your procedure to make sure that you are as comfortable as possible.
Why use Ultrasound or CT?
Biopsies are commonly done with the assistance of ultrasound imaging or CT imaging to better locate the area of concern. Using image guidance is the safest and most accurate way to get the best possible result for your biopsy.
How do I prepare for a Biopsy?
An interventional radiology nurse will call you prior to your biopsy to review further instructions with you.
-
You should not eat, or drink anything after midnight the day before your test.
-
Please bring any medications you are taking with you in its original container.
What happens after a Biopsy?
You will be kept on bed rest for 4-6 hours in the Interventional Radiology department. Our staff will keep you comfortable, as well as feed you. You will receive complete discharge instructions before leaving the department.
