Why Joints Ache

Osteoarthritis is caused by the cartilage, which cushions our joints, wearing away. If the normal, smooth cartilage has worn out, pain and swelling generally result.

“Cartilage cannot be renewed or replaced. You cannot grow new cartilage,” said James Burke, MD. “So, low impact activities are good to help keep your range of motion, while preventing further breakdown of cartilage.”

Missouri Baptist Medical Center has been ranked as one of St. Louis’ best hospitals for 2013-14 by U.S. News & World Report – with recognition as “high performing” in seven specialties.
