Vestibular Rehabilitation

The National Institute of Health reports dizziness and problems with balance as two of the most common patient complaints reported in physician offices. Ninety percent of all causes of dizziness can be identified and treated either medically, surgically, or with vestibular rehabilitation. Vestibular rehabilitation therapy (VRT) can help with a variety of vestibular and balance problems, including:

  • Vertigo and benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV)
  • Unsteadiness, disequilibrium and dizziness
  • Falls
  • Impaired balance
  • Lack of coordination
  • Symptoms associated with Meniere’s Disease

The goal of VRT is to promote central nervous system compensation for inner ear deficits. Vision and proprioception (the awareness of one’s body position in space) are often used to compensate for vestibular deficits. A thorough evaluation by one of our highly trained physical therapists will use specialized assessment tools, valid patient questionnaires, and skilled observation of posture, balance, gait, and compensatory strategies to develop an individualized treatment plan.
