BJC HealthCare is committed to providing you with high-quality patient care and services. This includes sharing with you information about our billing process for health care services and our Financial Assistance Policy. Rest assured, all of your information is considered confidential, and we pledge to treat you with respect and dignity.

We will talk with you about patient expenses and send you a bill in as timely a manner as possible. There are some payments which may be required from you at the time of service, such as insurance deductibles, co-pays and payment for services not covered by insurance. The bill you receive will clearly state the services provided, any applicable discounts, and when payment is due. When you receive your bill, it will tell you who to contact if you need assistance paying your bill.

If you do not have insurance coverage, we will automatically discount your hospital bill; and if you pay your bill in full within 30 days of your first notice, you will receive an additional discount. Please call us to discuss this discount.

If you have insurance coverage, we will bill your insurance carrier soon after health care services have been provided to you. It is possible that you may receive services from other health care professionals while you are at our hospital that will be billed separately. Some fees that may be billed separately include physicians, laboratory and radiology services.

Financial assistance

Every year BJC HealthCare provides more than $100 million in free care for uninsured patients, more than any other hospital or health system in Missouri. Depending on your situation, you may qualify for financial assistance which may include:

Helping you apply for Medicaid
Determining your eligibility for free health care services
Determining eligibility for a reduction in the amount you owe for some services

If you do not have health insurance or are concerned that you may not have enough insurance to cover the costs of your services, BJC HealthCare hospitals want to assist you. We will need to receive information from you about your job, income, resources, insurance coverage, family size and other information to help determine the appropriate programs for which you may qualify. We realize some of the questions we ask are sensitive, but it is necessary that we receive this information to help you. You have our commitment that we will respect you and your privacy during this process.

You must provide the information that is designated as “required” on the Patient Price Estimate Request Form for us to prepare an estimate. We will send a letter in response to this request within two business days of when we receive your request. The estimate that we provide will be a range of possible prices or an average price, depending upon your situation, for the facility only. The estimate will not include physician or other professional provider fees that are billed separately. The estimate will be based on the information you provide, may not be specific to any one BJC provider, and will not be specific to any particular insurance plan (if applicable).

If you have insurance, contact your health plan to make sure the BJC hospital you would like to use is a provider in your plan’s network. You also can get information related to your specific benefit plan (such as whether the service you desire is a covered benefit and the amount of deductible, co-payment or coinsurance you may owe).

The actual price of the service may be more or less than the estimate we provide. The actual price also may vary depending upon if you have chronic health issues, the medications you take, unexpected complications and other factors that may arise. The estimate is not a guarantee of what you may eventually owe.

BJC provides price information only on more common procedures, so an estimate may not be available for the procedure you are requesting. If an estimate is unavailable for the particular procedure you desire, someone will call you within one business day of receipt of your request to let you know that an estimate is not available.
