St. Louis Oasis Partnership Offers Stroke Survivors Expanded Support

A new Stroke Survivorship class, developed by a Missouri Baptist Medical Center nurse and St. Louis Oasis, is designed to support recent stroke survivors and their care partners as they navigate life’s challenges after a stroke.

This life-affirming program is the brainchild of a 13-year stroke-certified nurse at MoBap, Rachel Sargent, who identified firsthand the need for additional training after patients are discharged from medical care.

One of the most significant gaps in post-stroke care is explaining to people they need to do certain things but not having the platform to teach them how,” explains Sargent. “This class is designed to be the first steppingstone to recovery and living a full life after stroke.”

Stroke affects thousands of St. Louisans each year and significantly impacts the survivors' and their care partners' physical, emotional, and psychological well-being. "Stroke Survivorship" is holistically designed to provide families with the tools and resources to cope and thrive in the aftermath of a stroke.

Led by trained facilitators with videos from experienced healthcare professionals, "Stroke Survivorship" incorporates evidence-based approaches, practical strategies, and interactive discussions to empower participants to regain their independence, enhance their quality of life, and foster resilience in the face of adversity.

The program is held every Thursday and Friday from 10 a.m. to noon, starting July 6 to September 22, 2023 at the Richmond Heights Memorial Library located at 8001 Dale Avenue. Registration is now open, and interested participants can sign up by visiting the Oasis website or by calling 314-862-4859.

Additional class dates will be offered if enrollment is full.
