Breastfeeding Support

Your breast milk is the ideal food for your baby because it contains just the right balance of nutrients, is gentle on your baby’s digestive system and can help prevent infection. Breast milk even changes along with your baby as he or she grows.

At Missouri Baptist, we take pride in our comprehensive breastfeeding and lactation consultation services that help new mothers successfully breastfeed their infants both in the hospital and from home.

Our teams of International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) specialists know the benefits of breastfeeding for mother and baby and are here to help. IBCLC specialists make regular rounds in the Childbirth Center. Lactation consultants also are part of the hospital’s obstetrics management team.

From pre-natal preparation to pumping and weaning IBCLC help with breastfeeding education and support.

Prenatal Consultation

Prenatal breastfeeding classes are available at Missouri Baptist. However, some expectant mothers may also desire, or benefit, from a private, individualized lactation evaluation and consultation. These private consultations are available for a nominal fee.

During Your Stay

For our mothers who wish to breastfeed their babies, we strongly support their efforts and encourage them to begin breastfeeding as soon as possible after delivery. All mothers choosing to breastfeed will have the opportunity to consult with one of our IBCLC specialists. However, all of our nurses are well-trained to assist our mothers with feedings.

Breastfeeding At Home

Oftentimes, in the weeks following delivery, a new mother may notice some dramatic changes in her breasts and her baby’s feeding behavior. Some mothers may find that speaking to a lactation consultant will help them overcome certain challenges while breastfeeding at home. Furthermore, all mothers are encouraged to call with questions or concerns.

At MoBap we are committed to helping moms and babies experience the benefits and joys of breastfeeding. We boast an 90 percent breastfeeding initiation rate – among the highest in the region.

For more information, please call our Lactation Services at (314) 996-5747. To learn more about breastfeeding benefits and techniques by downloading our Breastfeeding Guide (create guide from the resources that previously each had their own page)
