Bowel Incontinence

Bowel incontinence is the inability to control bowel movements, causing stool (feces) to leak unexpectedly from the rectum. Also called fecal incontinence, bowel incontinence ranges from an occasional leakage of stool while passing gas to a complete loss of bowel control.

Treatment options may include:

  • Lifestyle modifications
  • Medications
  • Pelvic floor therapy, which consists of pelvic floor muscle exercises and biofeedback
  • Nonsurgical alternatives such as injection of bulking agents are now available and are performed on an outpatient basis
  • Surgery

Treatment plans are varied and are customized to each patient in coordination with the patient's physician.
