What is vascular disease?

Vascular disease is a condition that affects the circulatory system, including diseases of the arteries, veins, lymph vessels and blood disorders that affect circulation.

Vascular disease is most often caused by a hardening of the arteries, also called atherosclerosis. When the arteries are blocked, blood flow is limited and your body does not receive enough blood to circulate through the entire body.

Am I at risk for vascular disease?

The following conditions may leave you more likely to have vascular disease.

  • Smoking
  • Diabetes
  • High cholesterol
  • High blood pressure
  • Heart disease
  • Obesity – Metabolic Syndrome
  • Older than age 60
  • Aneurysm
