Missouri Baptist heart surgeon authors latest edition of cardiac surgery textbook

ST. LOUIS, Nov. 12, 2012 — Cardiac surgeons nationwide and around the world point to one source for the answers on adult and pediatric cardiac surgery – the Kirklin/Barratt-Boyes Cardiac Surgery textbook. And the lead author practices right here in Saint Louis, Missouri. Nicholas T. Kouchoukos, MD, is a cardiac surgeon at Missouri Baptist Medical Center, and just released the fourth edition of the textbook with his fellow authors.

As the world of medicine and surgery continue to grow and change rapidly, the fourth edition includes the latest advances and practices to cardiac surgery, including the endovascular management of thoracic aorta disease, new data on clinical outcomes, the most recent minimally invasive procedures, non-invasive CT angiography, new alternative surgical approaches to mitral valve surgery, and many more topics.

Just as surgery changes, so do the ways people learn information. For the first time ever, the book is now available online as an e-book through Elsevier. The e-book comes free with purchase of the textbook. The online version includes the complete text as well as a downloadable image library.

In August of this year, Dr. Kouchoukos was honored with the 2012 Antoine Marfan Award in recognition of his global leadership in cardiovascular surgery and his lifetime accomplishments in pioneering surgical technique to improve aortic and valve surgery for patients with Marfan syndrome. In addition, Dr. Kouchoukos is also playing a critical role in a multicenter surgical study of operations on the aortic root in patients with Marfan syndrome, sponsored by the National Marfan Foundation and Baylor College of Medicine.

Dr. Kouchoukos received his medical degree from Washington University in St. Louis. He completed his general surgery residency at Barnes Hospital and his cardiothoracic surgical residency at the University of Alabama in Birmingham. He is board certified in cardiovascular surgery and has been on the staff of Missouri Baptist Medical Center since 1996.
